PROJECT OVERVIEW

The UPPAbaby Cup Holder redesign addressed long standing usability issues with the previous model, which relied on a friction-fit clip that was difficult to attach, hard to remove, and prone to breakage. The project goal was to create a secure, intuitive, and durable attachment system while refreshing the overall aesthetic. I worked collaboratively with the project engineer to rethink both the mounting interface and the cup holder body, developing a clamshell-style clip compatible with the Vista, Cruz, and Minu frames. This new system enables one-handed, snap-on attachment, easy removal via a single release button, and a fit that can stay on the stroller when folding.

Material performance was a critical part of the project. The prior Tritan construction created a signature smoky translucency but contributed to weak points at the clip interface. To solve this, we introduced a Nylon 6 structural backbone for improved strength and impact resistance, paired with a Tritan outer body to maintain the brand’s aesthetic. I incorporated a gloss chamfer around the edges to visually soften the thicker plastic required to securely sandwich the Nylon 6 and Tritan components. Combined with flexible inserts for varied cup sizes, shatterproof durability, and dishwasher friendly, drainable design, the final solution delivers a robust, user-friendly cup holder that elevates both function and appearance.
